A sudden shift and loss in health care contracts brings about as much devastation to a hospital as the Dragon does to a peaceful village. Facing the Dragon, one realizes that it is peaceful on the back of the Dragon. Is it better to slay the Dragon? The biggest Dragon of all turns out to be “US”. On some distant shore, the sun rises as it has for millennium. …"

I found the ... poem a number of years ago browsing through a health related journal. My initial surprise in finding it was brought into perspective as I reflected on the wisdom and depth of character of the author. Having the opportunity to work with Soon at The Bryn Mawr Hospital for so many years and maintain a special friendship throughout my career has been the highest recognition and tribute one could receive in a career. Soon’s ability to sort through the details of daily activities and focus on the important building blocks of a balanced life such as family, friends and a special sense of humility towards the major accomplishments in his legacy will certainly be part of the memories that you are creating with this special edition of the MetroLines Newsletter for the Philadelphia membership of HFMA.

“Many of my hill top experiences were associated with HFMA. I have received so much from being a member of HFMA. It not only provided me with learning opportunities and professional development, but also it provided me with such precious networking opportunities to be in touch with so many wonderful life long colleagues.
“I always attended HFMA Chapter meetings…(and) enjoy seeing many new members getting involved in our Chapter activities and eventually becoming Chapter leaders….We are blessed with many dedicated Board members, Officers and Committee members. After all, we are a volunteer driven organization and without these dedicated volunteers, we will not have robust programs. I am always grateful and feel blessed to see so many young leaders stepping up to take the leadership roles. It takes many years to produce a leader and we are so lucky to find ourselves among so many future leaders for our Chapter.”

Shortly after I became president of the Chapter, I received a wonderful letter from Soon. It’s a personal treasure, but also contains a message for all of us.
