For eight decades, Jeanes Hospital has been an integral part of the Northeast Philadelphia and Montgomery County communities. In addition to employing more than a thousand neighbors and partnering with almost 450 area physicians in the care of our community, the new millennium at Jeanes has represented a continuation of compassion and good citizenship, and earnest growth in high acuity programs that give patients the option of finding advanced care in an easy-to-get-to suburban setting.
Jeanes was founded in 1928 through a provision in the will of Anna T. Jeanes, a Philadelphia Quaker who created an endowment for the establishment of a hospital, envisioning a facility that would operate under the Quaker philosophy of compassionate care that treats the whole person. Since its founding, Jeanes Hospital has continually worked to build upon her vision, being the only Quaker-founded acute care hospital in America. Only one other exists in the world, in northwest Kenya.
In 1946, Jeanes began to operate as a general medical surgical hospital and increased its number of beds from 46 to 100. Since then, Jeanes has continued to expand its services and currently is licensed for 176 beds. The Surgery-Rehab Building opened on the hospital’s 33-acre campus in 1987 to provide larger facilities for both general surgery and rehabilitation therapy. The Patient Care Center opened in May 1992, and was designed to provide modern facilities for patient care in a warm, home-like setting that is more conducive to recovery than traditional health care institutions.
On June 30, 1996, Jeanes Hospital became a member of the Temple University Health System. The affiliation strengthens the hospital's ability to serve the community and allows it to maintain its Quaker heritage. For example, with its Temple partners, Jeanes services include cardiac catheterization and open heart surgery, spine surgery and other neurosciences, advanced stroke care, and bariatric weight loss surgery. In addition to medical care, Jeanes Hospital serves the community in a number of ways, including free screenings, low-cost flu and pneumonia immunizations, educational programs, support groups, and more. These programs have been offered to our community-at-large as well as in partnership with area nursing homes, health clinics, and non-profits.
In recent years, Jeanes Hospital has been recognized for outstanding achievement in citizenship. For example, the Penn-Jersey chapter of the American Red Cross awarded Jeanes for its successful efforts in blood donor recruitment., and the hospital has received accolades for clinical programs, safety initiatives and medication safety standards from the likes of The Joint Commission, the Delaware Valley Healthcare Council, and the VHA.
Finally, Jeanes recently constructed a quarter-mile paved walking and jogging trail on its campus. It is a safe, controlled outdoor opportunity for employees and neighbors to get exercise cost-free. The trail was paid for with donations from employees and community members, as well as a state grant. This initiative is a solid example of how Jeanes Hospital helps its community take an active part in the quality of its wellness.
