LETTER FROM THE EDITORS
“I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure: which is: Try to please everybody.”
Herbert B. Swope editor of New York World Magazine
The quote from Mr. Swope continues to ring true with our current practices in US politics’. For many years we have been told about the pending bankruptcy of the Medicare and Social Security programs however we continue to plough down this road without any significant change insight. The most evident proof of this quote is the current state of healthcare. President Obama has made healthcare reform a priority of his administration and as we all know this topic has become a monumental fight between party lines, special interest groups, and who ever screams the loudest.

For the members of HFMA reform is nothing new, has anyone forgotten the Balance Budget provision former President Clinton instituted in the late 90’s. The cuts instituted by President Clinton were so dramatic that the act had to be rebalanced. The current bills that have passed the House and Senate do little with regards to healthcare reform. These bills are more about insurance reform as evident by Wall Street’s reaction to the Senate bill. These bills have deep cuts to Medicare, ala the Balance Budget Act of 97, and taxes on selected groups. Based on Congress’ projections a minimum of 94% of all individuals will now have insurance. Do these proposed bills rob Peter to pay Paul? Will the Medicare cuts be so severe they need to be restored? Stay tuned, 2010 appears to be a tumultuous year.
